Six miles northeast of Argos, on a hill, lay the "rich in gold" ancient city of Mykenae (Mycenae). Mythically founded by the hero Perseus, Mykenae became the most important city of Greece at the time of King Agamemnon. Mykenae reached its pinnacle during the Late Bronze Age (1400-1200 BC) when it became the center of military and economic power.

The Mykenaean people were master seafarers, built cyclopean structures and created the finest works of art. They were the heroic and adventurous people of the Iliad, the romantic poet warriors, the purest and best of Hellenes.
